Renewed fighting in Yemen has triggered a surge in hunger, the World Food Programme said on 2 October, warning it could affect food security far beyond the country.
Displacement
Clashes between government forces and Houthi rebels along the south-western coast have forced nearly 150,000 people from their homes, disrupted markets and restricted aid access, according to WFP.
Scale of need
More than 18 million Yemenis already faced acute food insecurity and 2.2 million children under five were acutely malnourished. WFP’s Matthew Hollingworth said nearly three in four households in accessible areas cannot meet basic needs, a record this year. Food prices are rising and traders report limited wheat flour stocks.
