The UN General Assembly met on 1 October to examine the latest Security Council veto, cast by China and Russia against a US-backed panel of experts on sanctions relating to Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The veto initiative
Since 2022, the Assembly must meet within 10 working days of any Security Council veto. The five permanent members, including the UK, hold the veto.
Calls for reform
Assembly President Khalilur Rahman said the initiative cannot substitute for effective Council action. Many states have called for limiting the veto, but reform of the 15-member Council remains unresolved.
