Women must be central to preventing conflict and building peace, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk told a forum in The Hague.
The figures
He said an estimated 676 million women and girls lived within 50km of active conflict in 2024, the highest since the end of the Cold War, and that women are the overwhelming majority of victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
Representation
Mr Türk pointed to a persistent gap between the role women play protecting communities and their presence in formal decision-making.
