Six soldiers who served with Scottish regiments in the First World War have been buried with full military honours in France, 108 years after they were killed, the Ministry of Defence said on 2 October.

Identified through DNA

MOD investigators known as the War Detectives used DNA evidence to identify Private George Fleming Brock and Private Percy Todd, both of the 11th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Four comrades remain unknown: one served with the Argylls and three probably with the Gordon Highlanders.

A young apprentice from Dunipace

Private Brock, from Dunipace near Falkirk, was an architectural apprentice with a Stirling firm when he enlisted in 1916. Wounded soon after arriving in France, he returned to his battalion in January 1918 and was killed on 28 March 1918 near Tilloy-les-Mofflaines during the German Spring Offensive, aged 19.

Honoured by today’s soldiers

Soldiers from 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, carried the coffins to the graveside as relatives looked on.
