Three children and a teacher have been killed in a shooting at a primary school in Bend, Oregon, after a 16-year-old forced his way through locked doors, police say. The attacker was shot dead by a community member who pursued him into the building.
The children who died were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in a critical condition following Thursday’s attack at Silver Rail Elementary School. Authorities have not released the victims’ names or identified the teenage suspect.
Schools in Bend are closed on Friday as the community comes to terms with the killings. The school district’s senior administrator, Steven Cook, described the tragedy as devastating and said words could not adequately express the grief being experienced.
What police have established
Police received an initial report at 12:59 local time from someone who said an unknown person was firing into their car with a long gun. Further emergency calls then reported that the attacker had entered the school. Photographs from the scene showed a red truck with bullet holes.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager shot at locks to gain entry. Officers arrived three minutes after the first call, according to the police account reported by the BBC. They confirmed the attacker was dead and searched the school.
Authorities say a community member saw the violence begin, followed the suspect inside and shot him. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the person’s intervention while acknowledging the emotional burden it would carry. The account of those actions comes from officials; the bystander has not been publicly identified in the reporting available so far.
The speed of the response has not removed the central questions for investigators. It remains unclear whether the suspect had any connection to the school or what motivated him. Police have described him as a local teenager but have not provided a fuller account of his background.
Families facing a devastating loss
Silver Rail has around 450 pupils and more than 40 adult staff members, police say. A neighbourhood primary school brings together children of different ages and families who expect the building to be a place of safety. The death of three pupils and a teacher has shaken that everyday sense of security.
A local reporter told BBC Radio 4 that the school was placed in lockdown and that some children communicated with parents outside using their watches. That account describes part of the experience during the emergency; it does not establish what happened in every classroom or how all pupils were evacuated.
A vigil was held in Drake Park after the shooting. The school closures give families and staff time away from lessons, but the immediate needs extend beyond the decision about when to reopen: two injured people remain critically ill, and families are mourning those who were killed.
Officials have asked the community to allow time for healing. With the victims’ identities still withheld, it would be premature to reconstruct their lives or describe conversations within families. The confirmed facts already convey the scale of the loss without speculation about private grief.
Questions about the weapon
Police have not publicly specified the exact weapon or the number of shots fired. Multiple law-enforcement sources told CBS News that a shotgun was used, according to the BBC, but that account should remain distinct from a formal public identification by investigators.
Oregon does not allow anyone under 18 to buy a firearm. Juveniles may possess one with parental permission for limited purposes, including hunting. Those rules do not explain how this suspect obtained a weapon, which remains an important unanswered part of the investigation.
The K-12 School Shooting Database recorded 235 shooting incidents at American schools last year and at least 140 this year, figures cited in the BBC report. Such incident totals are not a count of attacks identical to the killings in Bend, and should not be presented as though every recorded event involved the same circumstances.
For now, the priorities are the injured child and teacher, support for bereaved families and a careful investigation into how the attack unfolded. Police have established a sequence of forced entry, shootings and intervention, but the motive and the route by which the teenager acquired his weapon remain unknown.
