North Ayrshire Council’s Cabinet has approved plans for a new community transport service in partnership with Coalfields Community Transport.

Why it is needed

The council says engagement with communities showed transport is a major barrier, particularly for people in rural areas, older people, disabled people and those experiencing isolation.

How it will work

The model includes a dedicated accessible minibus, a central booking system, trained drivers and volunteer roles. Services could include transport for community groups, door-to-door trips for people with mobility problems and journeys to healthcare appointments.

Funding

The council has earmarked £100,000 to develop the project and fund its first three years. Councillor Alan Hill said reliable transport can transform people’s lives and reduce isolation.
