The radioactive legacy of US nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands was discussed at the UN Human Rights Council on 1 October.
The testing
UN deputy rights chief Awa Dabo said the 67 known tests between 1946 and 1958 live on in the bodies of Marshallese people and in contaminated lands and displaced communities.
Calls for remedy
She said virtually every Marshallese family has been touched by health consequences including elevated cancer rates, and called on US authorities to declassify radiation exposure and testing records so communities can obtain an effective remedy.
