Hinkley Point B nuclear power station in Somerset transferred from EDF to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) on 1 October 2026. It will be managed by NDA subsidiary Nuclear Restoration Services, which is already decommissioning the neighbouring Hinkley Point A.
A pioneering station
The NDA says Hinkley Point B was the first British-designed Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor to export electricity to the grid, in 1976. When it stopped generating in 2022, it had produced enough zero-carbon electricity to power every home in south-west England for 33 years.
Jobs
Around 250 people are transferring from EDF to NRS. Scotland’s own AGR stations, Hunterston B and Torness, form part of the same reactor fleet, with Hunterston B already in decommissioning.
