Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has relocated 10 wood ant nests in Glenmore Forest Park ahead of planned forestry and civil engineering work.

How it was done

Working with the Cairngorms National Park Authority and local volunteers, FLS used an excavator to lift entire nests, from new colonies to long-established ones, and move them to suitable nearby habitat to keep colonies intact.

Why it matters

Environment Forester Finbarr Rose said wood ants play an important role in native woodland and are a notable species in the Cairngorms.
