First Minister John Swinney will lead a trade mission during an official visit to India in October, the Scottish Government has announced.

Who is going

The delegation includes Salmon Scotland, the Scotch Whisky Association, Scottish Chambers of Commerce, VisitScotland and the higher education sector, along with food and whisky companies hoping to expand in India. Meetings will cover food and drink, renewable energy, education, tourism, culture and space.

The trade deal context

The government cites a report suggesting the UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement could create more than £3 billion of opportunities for Scotland’s priority sectors by 2030. That is a projection rather than a guaranteed outcome.

What the First Minister said

Mr Swinney said Scottish producers have spent years building relationships in India and the visit aims to turn them into real opportunities, adding that Scotland is open for business. He also highlighted links through sport, education and the Commonwealth.
