A report by former secondary headteacher John Wilson on improving how schools are funded and governed has been published by the Scottish Government, starting a three-month dialogue with local authorities.
Key recommendations
The proposals include creating Local Schools Authorities with statutory responsibility for school education, reviewing how schools measure success, making it easier for schools to collaborate, and clearly defining and ring-fencing national education funding.
Government response
Education Secretary Màiri McAllan pointed to rising exam attainment and a narrowing poverty-related attainment gap, but said change is needed to reduce variation between councils and schools.
What happens next
The recommendations are not yet government policy. They will be considered alongside councils before any decisions are made.
