A transit centre for Ebola patients has burned down at Kigonze camp in Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UN said.

Lost capacity

Julien Harneis, the UN’s senior Ebola response official in the country, called the fire deeply disappointing, saying each lost centre means lost investment and people unable to get care.

Camp abandoned

The camp had sheltered around 19,000 people. Thousands fled after reports that soldiers entered searching for weapons and suspected armed-group members. The UN says it is working with authorities to protect health facilities.
