Councils in England are underpaying for residential and nursing care by £2.36 billion a year, according to a Care England report, Priced to Fail.
The gap
The average residential placement has an annual shortfall of more than £10,000; for nursing care it exceeds £23,000. The gap has widened 49% in cash terms since 2022/23.
Postcode lottery
The weekly shortfall per nursing home resident ranges from £278 to £639 depending on location.
