The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a safety alert for baby sleeping bags that lack armholes or include a hood and are intended for unsupervised sleep in a cot or crib.
The risk
Without armholes, OPSS says a baby can slip down inside the bag, risking overheating, suffocation and potentially death. Hoods can cover a baby’s nose and mouth and cause similar harm. The alert follows nearly 50 recalls or safety reports involving dangerous sleeping bags in the UK since 2023.
Advice to parents
Parents and carers are advised not to buy, and to stop using, such products for unsupervised sleep, and to contact the seller, as they may be entitled to redress.
Online adverts
The Advertising Standards Authority separately warned parents to be alert to online ads for baby products claiming to help with colic, reflux, sleep or soothing.
