The Environment Agency has granted South East Water a drought permit to help secure supplies at Ardingly Reservoir near Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
Record low
The reservoir, which serves 280,000 customers, was at 23% of capacity on 28 September, its lowest level on record for the time of year.
Effect on the river
The permit means less water will remain in the River Ouse at Barcombe Mills. The agency warns the permit alone will not secure supplies, and the company may need further steps such as a non-essential use ban. At least average winter rainfall is needed for recovery by spring.
